> born in Bonaire, in the Dutch Antilles, to Rebecca Byrne, a non-magical, Irish, marine biologist, and single mother. > he was an Oops baby, from a weird fling Becca had with a British researcher (also non-magic), who wasn't interested in a family, and who she wasn't interested in having in her or her son's life. He helped with medical fees and offered to pay child support, but Becca didn't really need it, as she was very accomplished in her field, and didn't really like being given money by people anyway. the father was welcome to be in Dom's life if he wanted, but he was also kind of a twat, so she was glad he wasn't that interested. > traveled a lot for research; he was home schooled by mommy, and she shared all of her research with him. they went from lab to lab across the world, and she did a lot of conservation and animal recovery work as well, advising on aquariums being built, studies at sea, etc etc. a lot of scuba diving. mostly in tropical places, but they were in Iceland for a while doing studies on Orcas, and while Dom loved swimming with the Orcas, the cold really sucked. He absolutely hated being in Antarctica, but the seals and penguins were still worth it. Spent a good amount of time in the Mediterranean doing work with dolphins and sea turtles as well. > Developed strong Natural plane magic at around 12, Becca was totally baffled, and after a lot of doctors seeing him and coming up with nothing, and Dom getting tired of being poked and prodded, a shaman approached her in Ecuador, where she was researching at the Galapagos Islands, and explained what was happening with him. Taking Dominic as his pupil, he taught him about his magic, how to use it, how not to use it, about the planes and all the essentials. He'd explained that there were schools he could go to for it, to learn more, when Dom reached 15, but he'd been aggressively against it. He wanted to stay with his mother, and continue to learn about marine biology from her, help her with her work (as his affinity for water and animal magic was strong), and be near the sea all the time. So that's what they did. > loves to go diving into the ocean and basically scuba dive without any of the scuba equipment. his magic allows him to separate the oxygen out from the water, like a fish would, and breathe well enough underwater, though the water pressure and the temperature still affects him as it would any other diver. if he has a thick enough wet suit to keep him warm, he can go down about 120ish meters at most, before things get bad. any lower, and he'll need proper gear for it. but that's plenty deep enough to play with all the creatures he likes to play with. he'll often sneak off the back of his mother's boat when they go out to sea to study, and go swimming with whatever creature she happens to be researching at the time. especially if they're whales. he loves whales. he speaks legit whale. (okay well he speaks everything marine animal related, and it's less speak, more brain-vibes, but it does allow him to get closer to them in a way his mother and the other scientists can't) > masters degree in marine biology; between online school and his mother staying put in the washington/west coast area for a while, he was able to finished up school. though you probably wouldn't guess it, he does have a masters, and his mother has taught him basically everything she knows by now - they work together on projects and research. he went to school near seattle, due to the fact his father agreed to help them pay for it if he lived close to him, and at the time, his father was the head biologist at a marine theme park, not SeaWorld, but a lot like it. Dom made friends with one of the whales there that was fairly miserable in captivity, brought her live fish to chase around, played with her, tried to help soothe what emotional pain she had from missing her pod and being isolated there. though he didn't tell his father about his magic, he did tell him repeatedly that the whale needed to be put back into the sea. a lot of his time not at school was spent bonding with her, and after speaking to some of the native people, he started calling her "Tokitae" ('beautiful day' in Coast Salish (yeah i stole it from the Lolita article, fite me, i couldn't find another name)), or shortening it to Toki. > whale thief. he is a fish klepto. while in school, once, he absolutely broke into a his dad's workplace and freed Orca he'd become friends with about 3 years into school, because fuck you. he may have done it several more times at different places (with various marine life), throughout his life, but whatever, you can't prove shit. he may be SeaWorld's enemy number 1. it's the problem with having an empathetic link with marine life. he can't just let them suffer. he also maybe attends Orca entertainment shows just to mess with the performances and sit on the front row with an insulated backpack and toss free fish into the pool. if he can manage to get called up to volunteer in a show, he hijacks it. Dom has been banned from all SeaWorlds in the US, but thankfully they don't all know him internationally :D and he maybe learned how to glamour himself just for this. Suffice to say, his dad stopped trying to bond with him after he cost his company millions of dollars. > whale thief pt 2: after graduating with his masters, he went to find Toki's calf that she birthed in captivity and had taken away, stole him too, and brought him to her. Toki had sort of adopted Dom has her babbu too by then, and while she had a pod family to roam with in the Pacific Northwest, and had her real babbu back, he was still very sad to leave her. > whale thief pt 3: he sticks with the animals he pulls out of parks for a while after as well, and because he has the empathy link to communicate with them, he can help get them rehabilitated and ready to go back into the wild much faster. he'll keep them close by for a while, teach them hunting, go out into the ocean with them, finds them a pod to join and social links to form and etc etc etc > Toki might be a lil bit magic, bc she tends to just SHOW UP wherever he is in the world to say hi when he's sad. Best whale mama. > defender of the locals, dominic byrne: after freeing toki, and inviting some of the local native tribesmen to come visit her in the lagoon she'd been staying in near he and his mother's house, they praised him as a friend to the spirits and thus, to their people. some time later, a dispute broke out, the tribe being targeted by some other magic people who were wanting to take over some of their ancient magic juju for idk reasons i haven't decided yet, and dominic helped them in hahahaha basically getting all the animals in the area to chase them the fuck out. toki and family flipped their boat too, oops. > smiley, charming, playful, m i s c h i e v o u s, flirty af, also a water hippy, he's kind of a weirdo > likes people, but likes animals more > SEA WIIITTCCCHHHH > does not understand the internet, he is bad at it > has also never been to a club, but has had hella culture and gone to 549305843026432 native festivals and chilled with locals in remote places, and def danced to folk music here and there > not terribly interested in the magical world, as far as the school and society. he likes his world, he doesn't feel the need to change it, there's enough in the regular world already to explore > despite the beach hippie-ness, he's actually very intellectual, looks at things scientifically, and has a deep love for education in general - believes ignorance is a killer, and education can save lives, life styles and homes. nothing is a waste as far as learning goes, for him, and he's always interested in what people have to teach him. thus, he kind of ends up acquiring a lot of random ass knowledge, so he's random fact dude, on occasion. > CARES SO MUCH, dom frequently takes up crusades for various causes, as he finds it impossible not to care when he hears a people or place having troubles, especially humanitarian and environmental issues. be it activism or offering aid/labor or spreading awareness or protesting or stealing marine life from parks, he's up for it, and if he thinks it's the right thing to do, he'll do it, regardless of cost or legality. because it's the right thing to do, and that's all that matters to him. takes environmental issues v seriously, has def been arrested for protest rallying before, will peg someone in the back of the head with litter if they drop it in front of him > likes to tease, poke fun, generally not maliciously unless someone's just being a bitch. or pretending climate change doesn't exist. or works for BP. > studious af if you put a science book in front of him, gets really into the science side and biology of the work he does with his mom, does have a genuine passion for learning. > fluent in english, spanish and dutch, semi-fluent in a lot of others > loves pirate lore and exploring sunken ships liek woah, definitely has a collection of random junk he's picked up in the sea > such. a. mama's boy. he tells his mommy everything, they really don't fight too much, she frets over him being too reckless with his ocean diving, he takes underwater cameras and films things for her to appease her. all of his boyfriends and girlfriends have to meet his mama. > def had boyfriends and girlfriends, he's a flirty thing > aesthetic, ps, he has absolutely cuddled a shark before |
